Enterprise Asset Management: Theoretical basis, Czech market overview and practical applications

Abstract

Purpose of the article: Purpose of the article is to analyse main facts about the Enterprise Asset Management (EAM) in Enterprise Resource Planning systems. EAM means the whole life optimal management of the physical assets of an organization to maximize value. It covers such things as the design, construction, commissioning, operations, maintenance and decommissioning/replacement of plant, equipment and facilities. The EAM functionality in ERP systems is very important. Competitive pressures force organizations to minimize asset total cost of ownership and streamline their asset management operations. Scientific aim: The main scientific aim is to reveal that the Enterprise Asset Management functionality is the important part of ERP systems in organisations which are focused on the Service Lifecycle Management and managing of the optimal balance between maximizing Overall Asset Productivity and minimizing Total Cost of Ownership. Methodology/methods: The key to establishing appropriate research methodology/methods in the area is an understanding of the meaning and significance of the so-called Methodological Triangulation which is the combination of a qualitative as well as a quantitative methodological approach as a fullvalued alternative to other research. It is decidedly impossible to do without using a qualitative method which has been confirmed not only by well-renowned researchers` investigations, but also by those of Center for inVestigations into Information Systems itself. Findings: The most important findings are the new information in this area. It is really possible to effectively use the ERP systems with EAM functionality in organisations that operate in many sectors, for example: automotive, aircraft industry, military industry, engineering, metalworking industry, mining industry, repair industry, food and beverage industry, chemical and farmaceutical industry, utility, healthcare, facility management, logistics and transportation, housing stock administration. Conclusions: The main conclusion of the article is the basic review of the offer of the Czech market with ERP and EAM applications.
